Gums

What

is a gum treatment?

With a gum treatment, the gums become healthier and better looking.

During a cleaning or periodontal treatment, plaque and tartar are removed from the teeth and roots. If cleaning the tooth root alone is not sufficient, the gums can also be corrected. This improves the condition of the gums and removes inflammation of the gums and jawbone. The gums can recede further but remain stable in healthy condition.
If the gums are too long or too short, a correction can be carried out. The thickness of the gums can also be adjusted and moved to the desired position.

Why

a gum treatment?

Bacteria in dental plaque

Bacteria in dental plaque and around tartar can cause inflammation of the gums and jawbone, called gingivitis and periodontitis. Signs of gum inflammation are redness, swelling and possibly pain. This inflammation is located along the tooth root, which makes gum treatment necessary.

Appearance

Improving the position of the gums can be an aesthetic wish. A gum treatment is necessary if the gums do not cover the tooth properly. Insufficient coverage can cause sensitivity. Healthy gums only cover the root, not the crown. In the case of exposed roots (recession), treatment can cover the gums again.
Gummy smile: with a gummy smile, excessive gums cover the crown of the tooth, which is less attractive. The gums can then be shortened for a beautiful smile.
