Check-up
What
is a check-up?
During a check-up, the health of your teeth is assessed and you are asked about your general health. Oral hygiene, cavities, wear and the health of your gums are examined. A risk assessment is also made about problems that could possibly arise in the future.
Sign upVisual examination
the dentist or dental hygienist visually examines your mouth, teeth, gums, tongue and throat for signs of tartar, plaque, tooth decay, gum problems, oral cancer or other mucous membrane abnormalities.
Periodontal examination
the dentist measures the depth of the pockets around your teeth. Deep pockets can indicate gum disease.
X-rays
depending on your dental history and the findings during the visual examination, X-rays may be taken to get a better picture of the structures under the gums, such as roots and jawbone and in the dental tissue such as cavities. This helps identify problems such as cavities between the teeth, bone loss or hidden dental problems.
Discussion and advice
after the examination, the dentist will discuss the findings with you. He/she will give advice on your overall oral health, any problems and recommendations for treatment or improvements in your oral hygiene.
