Crowns/bridges
Crowns and bridges are dental restorations that repair damaged teeth and replace missing teeth.
- A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over an existing tooth or implant. The purpose of a crown is to restore the tooth in shape, size, strength and appearance.
- A bridge consists of two or more connected crowns that replace one or more missing teeth by using adjacent teeth as support. There are various options for both crowns and bridges in terms of design, color and material.
Why
choose a crown or bridge treatment?
Damaged or weakened teeth: for example due to tooth decay, fractures, large fillings or severely worn teeth.
Root canal treatment: Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment are often weakened and require a crown to maintain their integrity.
Appearance: To improve the shape, size or color of a tooth to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing result.
Part of a bridge: To replace missing teeth (these teeth are called the pillars of the bridge).
Functional restoration: Bridges can restore the chewing function after it has been lost or be part of a complete dental reconstruction.
Appearance: To improve the shape, size or color of existing and missing teeth to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing result.
Prevention of shifting: If a tooth is lost, the teeth next to it and opposite it can grow out of direction. This can lead to functional and aesthetic problems.
Implant alternative: To replace a missing tooth or molar, one may choose to get an implant or a bridge. Various factors are important in this case, the advantages and disadvantages will be discussed with you by your dentist.
